Classic Baked Ziti
INGREDIENTS
• 1 lb ziti noodles
• 1½ lbs ground Italian sausage
• 1 medium onion, finely chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 (28-oz) can crushed tomatoes
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
• ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
• 1 cup heavy cream
• ½ cup grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, divided
• ⅓ cup chopped fresh basil, plus more for serving
• 8 oz whole milk mozzarella cheese, shredded (about 2 cups)
Directions
1. Cook Pasta: Boil ziti noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
2. Cook Sausage: In a large skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Add onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
3. Make Sauce: Stir in crushed tomatoes, salt, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes. Simmer for 10-15 minutes. Stir in heavy cream and ¼ cup Parmigiano.
4. Combine with Pasta: Toss cooked ziti with the sauce and fresh basil.
5. Assemble: Preheat oven to 375°F. Transfer ziti mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Top with mozzarella and remaining Parmigiano.
6. Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
7. Serve: Garnish with additional basil and enjoy.
